Course One The Science of Human Memory: Foundations for Investigative Interviewing Module 1 Understanding Human Memory Estimated Time: 10–15 minutes Module 2 Applying Memory Science to Investigative Interviewing Estimated Time: 10–15 minutes Course Description Memory is fundamental to effective investigative interviewing, yet the processes that influence what people remember and report are often misunderstood. This self-paced introductory course explores the science of human memory, including how attention, perception, stress, emotion, sleep, and retrieval influence recollection. Grounded in peer-reviewed scientific research, participants will develop a foundational understanding of how experiences are encoded, retained, reconstructed, and reported. The course introduces practical, scientifically informed principles for obtaining information while recognizing the limitations of human memory and the potential for memory contamination. Designed for law enforcement officers, investigators, attorneys, aviation crew members and safety investigators involved in post-event debriefings, healthcare professionals, human resources and compliance personnel, workplace investigators, military personnel, students, and others who gather or evaluate accounts of past experiences, the course emphasizes the application of memory science across professional disciplines.
