This self-paced introductory course examines the scientific foundations of trauma-informed interviewing, including how stress and trauma may influence attention, memory encoding, retrieval, emotional responses, and communication. Grounded in scientific research and evidence-informed interviewing practices, participants will develop a foundational understanding of how trauma-related responses may vary among individuals and circumstances. The course introduces practical interviewing principles that support psychological safety, respectful communication, and effective information gathering while recognizing the importance of minimizing unnecessary distress, suggestion, and potential memory contamination. Designed for law enforcement officers, investigators, attorneys, aviation crew members and safety investigators involved in post-event debriefings, healthcare professionals, human resources and compliance personnel, workplace investigators, military personnel, students, and other professionals who interview individuals following potentially traumatic experiences, this course introduces trauma-informed approaches to ethical and scientifically grounded information gathering across professional disciplines.
